28-year-old mother shot to death inside north Birmingham Piggly Wiggly

A 28-year-old employee of a north Birmingham Piggly Wiggly was shot to death inside the store Monday afternoon.

The Christmas Eve shooting happened inside the store at 2500 29th Ave. N. He identified the victim as Jerika Manuel. She was a mother.

Sgt. Johnny Williams said the shooting happened shortly before noon. when someone entered the store and “started an altercation” with the female employee who was fatally shot. He later updated that information to say Manuel and the suspect, whose name has not been released, were involved in a physical altercation just before the suspect shot the victim.

The suspect fled the scene before police arrived. No arrests have been announced.

Manuel is Birmingham’s 105th homicide victim this year. Of those at least seven have been ruled justifiable and therefore police will not include those in their year-end tally. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 153 homicides, including the 105 in Birmingham. The city finished 2017 with 111 homicides.
