Gov. Ivey ordered flags be flown at half-staff in honor of Birmingham Police Sergeant Wyasha Carter, who was gunned down Sunday morning.
Carter, 44, served in the Birmingham Police since 2011 and was promoted to sergeant last February. Carter was fatally shot while questioning two people suspected of trying to break into cars on 5th Avenue North around 2:00 a.m.
Another officer was critically injured in the shooting and taken to UAB Hospital. Police Chief Patrick Smith says the unidentified officer is “not out of the woods.”
Police say an 18-year-old suspect is in custody and a 31-year-old suspect remains at UAB Hospital.
Flags are to remain at half-staff until sunset on January 20.
