A Wedowee high school teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with an underage student has been jailed on a $1,000,000 bond.

On Wednesday, Wedowee Police arrested Randolph County High School teacher, David Burkhalter, 30, for an alleged sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student. Burkhalter is being held in the Randolph County Jail. He has been charged with eight felonies: two counts of second degree rape, second degree sodomy, enticing a child, two counts of electronic solicitation of a child for sex, and two counts of school employee sex act with a student less than 19 years of age.

Wedowee Police and Randolph County Sheriff’s Department investigators arrested Burkhalter at the school after finding that accusations against teacher were credible, they say. Burkhatler’s bond is pending a further hearing.

Anyone with information regarding the ongoing investigation is urged to contact law enforcement. Requests for updates may be directed to the Randolph County District Attorney’s Office.
