Alabama’s top general fires 3-star underling for ‘loss of confidence’

Multiple reports say Perna relieved Becker Thursday of command of the Army Installation Management Command headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The installation management command, which is responsible for Army housing among other things, came under Perna’s control in March as part of an Army reorganization.

Perna removed Becker “due to a loss of trust and confidence in his ability to command,” the Army said in a statement. “Loss of confidence” can relate to performance of duties or it can relate to outside issues. The Army said it was not “mission-related.”

“We cannot comment further with an ongoing investigation, but the relief was not mission related,” Army spokeswoman Cynthia O. Smith told publications covering the Army. That also means it wasn’t a result of the Army’s much-publicized problems with aging base housing.

Three-star generals are one step below the Army’s highest peacetime rank. They command corps-sized units of 20,000 to 45,000 soldiers.
