Alabama woman arrested by Illinois police in failed plot to murder two people

An Alabama woman was arrested by police in Illinois in connection with a failed plot to murder two people there, authorities said Monday.

Shannon J. Jones, of Center Point in Jefferson County, was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder stemming from the two incidents on Friday and Sunday in Geneseo, Illinois, Geneseo Deputy Chief of Police Gene Karzin said in a statement. Her bond was set at $500,000.

In the first incident, Jones and another person allegedly tried to poison the victim’s drink, according to police. While the victim became ill, no lasting effects of the poisoning were believed to have occurred.

Jones and her co-conspirator allegedly tried to bludgeon another victim to death at a home in Geneseo, Karzin said. The victim was able to escape the house and was not seriously injured.

Jones and the second suspect allegedly planned the murders over the last several weeks, Karzin said.

Police said additional arrests are expected in the case. The investigation into the incidents was ongoing.
