A shootout between two suspects and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies left both suspects wounded by gunfire.

The incident began when deputies tried to stop a vehicle on Roebuck Parkway Tuesday afternoon, said JCSO Deputy Chief David Agee. “The driver hit the gas and took off running until he got hemmed in at this location” Agee said. “The driver and the occupant both got out of the car and shot at deputy sheriffs. The deputy sheriffs returned fire and the two suspects were hit.”

Both were taken to UAB Hospital’s Trauma Center. Agee said their conditions weren’t immediately available. No law enforcement officers were injured.

The chase ended in a neighborhood in the 1600 block of 90th Place North near Zion City. Birmingham police also responded to the scene, but left once the county arrived en masse.

As is protocol with officer-involved shootings, ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation was brought in to handle the shooting probe. SBI will turn over its findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office once the investigation is complete.
