MACON COUNTY — On Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022, at the request of the Shorter Police
Department, Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State
Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched a homicide investigation which occurred at the
convenient store located at 540 Main Street in Shorter.
Shortly after being notified, SBI Special Agents identified Brandon Howard, 27, of Shorter, as the suspect. Howard was arrested on Monday, Jan. 3, with the shooting death of Xavier Smith Jr., 28, also of Shorter.
Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Macon County District Attorney’s Office.
