The Obituary for Mr. Jerry “Sonny” Hill


The funeral service for Jerry “Sonny” Hill, age 79 of Lineville, will be held on Friday, March 29, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. at Fairview Congregational Methodist Church with Dr. Benny Tate officiating. Burial will follow in the Lineville City Cemetery.

Mr. Hill passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at the Bethany House in Auburn. He was a native and life-long resident of Lineville, a graduate of Lineville High School – Class of 1957 and had also attended Southern Union State Community College. Mr. Hill worked for the Alabama Power Company and retired after 32 years of service, having worked his way up from a lineman to a lineman foreman and manager. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Germany as an armor tank driver. Mr. Hill enjoyed fishing, woodworking, farming and hanging out with his buddies at the Lineville Co-op, solving all the world’s problems. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren and enjoyed bringing his son Phillip to Lineville to visit. Mr. Hill was also a devout Christian who was passionate about his Lord and his church.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruby Hill; two daughters: Kristy Smith (Gregg) and Geri Lett (Chris); one son: Phillip Hill, all of Lineville; five grandchildren: Abbie Jones (Aaron), Eric Lett (Ariona) and Grant Smith, all of Lineville, Morgan Watson (Michael) of Jacksonville and Emily White (Caleb) of Lanett; two great grandchildren: Ezra and Lucy Jones; two sisters: Mattiline Todd of Birmingham and Maudine Birchfield of Athens; one brother, Roy F. Hill of Atlanta.

Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his parents: William Jeff Hill and LaVera Pearl Humphries; two sisters: Beatrice Latham and Catherine Britt; four brothers: Elvin, Curtis, Buford and Charles Hill.Gregg Smith, Chris Lett, Grant Smith, Michael Watson, Eric Lett, Caleb White and Aaron Jones will serve as pallbearers. Geral Clark, Steve Foster, Russ Foster, Frank Hopper and Ronald Lett will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at Fairview Congregational Methodist Church on Friday, March 29, 2019 from 10:00 A.M. until service time at 1:00 P.M. Flowers will be accepted; however, the family prefers that contributions in memory of Mr. Hill be made to Fairview Congregational Methodist Church at the First State Bank. Send online condolences at
