The Obituary for Mrs. Helen McClain Bradford


The funeral service for Helen McClain Bradford, age 89 of Ashland, will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at the First Baptist Church in Ashland with the Reverend Rusty Craig officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Memorial Gardens in Stockbridge, Georgia.

Mrs. Bradford passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at the Clay County Hospital. She was born in Calhoun, GA. on May 15, 1929 to Walter and Reesie McClain. Helen spent much of her childhood in Comer, GA. and as a young adult moved to Atlanta, where she met her future husband, a young Marine named Robert Daniel Bradford. They were married on Sept. 3, 1949.

Helen stayed busy raising her three sons and being a foster parent for several years. She also worked in Atlanta for Royal McBee, the division of Royal Typewriter which sold and serviced early computers. After moving to Ashland in the 1990s, she worked at the public library, served as a volunteer at Clay County Hospital and was a member of First Baptist Church in Ashland.

Helen was proud of her deep roots in the South and her Scottish heritage, going so far as to travel to Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull, the ancient home of her ancestral clan.

She is survived by three sons: Robert Dale (Martha), Michael William (Theresa) and Lonnie Joe; four grandchildren: Kevin Bradford (Anya), Kerri Bradford (Brian), Stephen Bradford and Stephanie Bradford and four great-grandchildren: Trent Bradford, Kai Bradford, Conner Bradford and Macaidyn Bradford.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband and four siblings: sisters Alma Lunsford, Edna Harrelson, Louise Shackleford and brother Levi McClain.

The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church in Ashland on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 from 9:30 A.M. until service time at 10:30 A.M. Send online condolences at
