The Obituary for Ms. Mary Christine Barrett Jordan

The funeral service for Mary Christine Barrett Jordan, age 96 of Cragford, will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at the Mellow Valley Baptist Church with Rev. James Owens officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

Ms. Jordan passed away on Friday, April 26, 2019. Born on May 19, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Mozelle and Grover Barrett. She was the eldest of nine children and was preceded in death by her brothers, L.G., Derwood, and Charles Barrett; sisters, Wanda Jean Barrett and Becky Patterson; son, Toby Jordan; granddaughter, Pamela Powell.

Christine is survived by her sister, Glenda Perry of Chattanooga, TN; brothers, Huey (Gay Nell) Barrett of Mellow Valley; Reggie (Anita) Barrett of Lineville and Maxwell Barrett (Doris) of Tallahassee, FL; daughters, Carolyn Powell of Alexander City, Melba (Gary) Loftin of Ozark, Anna (Glenn) Berry of Heflin, Sue (Steve) Nelson of Auburn, Kristi Jordan of Alexander City, 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and her faithful dog, Buffy.

She will be remembered for her love of family, reading, Scrabble, baking, gardening and caring for others. There was always a Scrabble board on her table, a cake in the oven, a bridesmaid dress on the sewing machine, vegetables on the counter and a book on the night stand. She was the grandmother whose grandchildren preferred to spend their vacations with her rather than going to the beach.

Christine was a devoted member of Mellow Valley Baptist Church for over 78 years. The Church was the center of her social life. No church dinner was complete without her dressing and pound cake. Her fried pies were legendary. For two of her grandchildren she made over 500 for their wedding receptions. She practiced homeopathic medicine and organic gardening before they were in vogue. She kept up with all national affairs. She rarely forgot a name or the names of the preceding three generations.

Her front porch was the scene of summer visits. While others abandoned the social aspects of sitting on the porch with friends, she mastered the art. This included iced tea and, of course, cats and dogs. She touched so many lives with her generosity and kindness. We should all live so well.

Ms. Jordan’s great-grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Her grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at Mellow Valley Baptist Church on Sunday, April 28, 2019 from 1:30 P.M. until service time at 3:00 P.M. Send online condolences at
