She was born Pearl Dean Martin on February 15, 1931 to Clarence L. Martin and Alvis Zora Pashel Martin in Clanton, Alabama. On November 23, 1961 Dean married Ernest Lewis from Fayette, AL. Together they raised two families (six children). Shortly after their marriage Ernest was transferred by Dan River Mills to Dadeville. It was here they raised their children and lived until their deaths.
Dean worked for Dale/Lamar Manufacturing Company for 27 years until she had to retire to take care of Ernest after his major stroke. She cared for him 15 years until she was no longer able. She had to put him in Bill Nichols Retirement Home. After that she still cared for him. She went everyday to feed him and make sure he was okay.
Dean was a wonderful cook. Raising her children she never knew what mill village kid would be sitting at her table. She cooked for many years Sunday Dinner for her children and grandchildren. Oh yes! her neighbors came and ate too.
She was the back bone of her family. And to her family she was just MawMaw. She was a strong willed, independent person. She was loving and caring. She loved her neighbors. She carried them to their doctor appointments, grocery shopping, and just rode with them to eat. Her Christmas dinner’s were out of this world and never asked anyone to bring a thing. So much food the family took plates home. She was a lifetime blood donor and she loved Alabama Football.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Zora Martin; grandsons, Blane and Brandon Henderson; stepson, Billy H. Lewis; brothers, Calvin, Carl, Charles, and Raymond Martin; and her dog, Jo Jo.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Henderson of Opelika; sons, Jerry Driver (Donna) of Eclectic and Mike Driver (Tina) of Jackson’s Gap; step daughters, Betty Bass (Jim) of Auburn and Helen Jenkins (Joel) of Auburn; sisters, Doris Connell of Clanton and Dorothy Hustead (Lester) of Bridgeport, WV; sister in law, Linda Martin of Hixson, TN; six grandchildren; four step grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; ten step great grandchildren; and special friends, Ida Mae Lenord and Vickey Pressley.
The family would like to thank Ivy Creek Hospice for their wonderful care; Sue Purvis for her help; and her granddaughters, Erika Driver, Shanta McGuckin, and Tierra Sandeen for helping care for their MawMaw. Also Sue Allen and April Fuller for making Dean’s hair look beautiful for so many years.
