Mr. Marvin Zack Brown was born to the late Zack Z. Brown and Rosa Gwendolyn McComb Brown on October 30, 1951 in McComb, MS.
At an early age, he confessed his faith in Christ and worked in his faith at the St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, Snow Hill, AL. He served as the Steward Pro-Tem, Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School Teacher. He has served as representative for the church at District meetings, Annual Conferences, Sunday School Conventions, and Planning Meetings.
He started his education at the Walnut Street School in Summit, MS. From 2nd grade and until graduating from high school in 1969, he attended Snow Hill Institute, Snow Hill, AL. He completed his undergraduate studies at Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, AL in Social Studies Education with a minor in English in 1973. In 1977, he earned his Masters of Education degree from Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, AL. He spent his entire 45 year educational work experience until retirement in 2017 with the Auburn City School System. His first teaching assignment was at Auburn Junior High School in Auburn, AL. The next teaching assignment was at Auburn High School as a Social Studies teacher and then as a part of the administration. He served as advisor for various clubs and was a fixture at the Junior/Senior prom. For several years, he operated the clock for basketball and football games.
He was united in holy matrimony for forty nine years to Verdell Carter, and to this union they had two children, daughter, Cordelia Magalene Brown, and son, Nicholas Zack Brown.
After marriage, the couple made their home in Tuskegee, AL. He was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Macon County. He served as the president of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at Washington Public School, Tuskegee Public School, and Booker T. Washington High School, all in Tuskegee, AL. He was also President of the Booker T. Washington High School Football Booster Club. He served as President of the Snow Hill Institute Alumni Association. He was a member of the Lee County Tuskegee University Alumni Club and the Tuskegee Local Alumni Club.
He was an avid sports fan, gardener, and wood craftsman.
He departed this life surrounded by his family on Sunday, August 14, 2022 in Auburn, AL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Zack Z. Brown and Rosa G. M. Brown; maternal grandparents, James and Cordelia McComb; and paternal grandparents, Rueben and Mary Lou Brown.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his loving wife, Verdell Carter Brown, Tuskegee, AL, his loving daughter, Cordelia Magalene Brown, Auburn, AL, and his loving son, Nicholas Zack (Vishaka) Brown, Auburn, AL. A sister-in-law, Rutha Carter Davis Bonner, Farmersville, AL. Three brothers-in-law, Donald (Melvia) Carter, Sr., Mt. Willing, AL, Lovell (Creasy) Carter, Pine Apple, AL, and Harrison Jones, Pensacola, FL. He also leaves his cherished memories to the Carter Family, Snow Hill Community Family, St. Paul/St. Peter A.M.E. Church Family, Little Zion A.M.E. Zion Church Family, current and former Auburn City Schools employees, Tuskegee family, and a host of relatives and friends.
The family received friends on Friday, August 19, 2022 from 4:30 PM â€” 6:30 PM at the Tuskegee University Chapel, Tuskegee, AL. The homegoing celebration service was held on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 1:00 PM at G. W. Watts Elementary School, 2544 County Highway 59, Pine Apple, AL 36768 with Rev. George Cyrus, Sr. delivering the eulogy and Rev. Tommy Dorsey, Pastor. The burial followed the service at the St. Paul/St. Peter A.M.E. Church Cemetery, Snow Hill, AL.
