DV Assault 1st charges being upgraded to Murder/Lee County Sheriff’s Office
On November 29, 2018, at approximately 4:35 AM CSDT, Johnnie Lee Forte, (64), of Opelika died in Piedmont Columbus Regional Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia as a result of gunshot injuries suffered during a domestic violence assault which had occurred at his residence in Lee County, Alabama.
On November 16, 2018, at approximately 7:33 PM CSDT, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 5400 Block of US Highway 29 North Opelika, Lee County, Alabama in reference to a report of a gunshot victim. The caller stated that the victim’s live in girlfriend, Shakela Shanae Minnifield, (34), had shot the victim multiple times while he was sitting in a chair in their living room. Deputies arrived on the scene and discovered the elderly male victim lying on the floor suffering from multiple gunshot injuries. Because of the seriousness of his injuries, the victim was flown by a Life Flight helicopter to the hospital in Columbus where he was admitted and has been undergoing treatment for his injuries.
As a result of this Investigation a warrant for Domestic Violence Assault 1st was issued for Minnifield’s arrest. Since the death of the victim, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office will be obtaining an arrest warrant charging Minnifield with Murder. Forte’s body will be transported the Department of Forensic Sciences Medical Examiner’s Office located in Montgomery, Alabama for a post-mortem examination.
